You can call me high-functioning, you can call me an aspie, you can even call me a freak. But whatever you call me, it’s not because I’ve been diagnosed an Autistic person. It’s because that’s how you see me.
Labels are not inherently good or bad. It is the emotions and the thoughts that we assign to those labels that gives them the power to manipulate how we think and feel. I am never ashamed of saying, yes I’m an Aspie, or yes I am an Autsie. Calling someone high- or low-functioning isn’t giving them a label. It’s giving them the freedom to make a label for themselves.
I am proud to say that I am a high-functioning autistic person. I have a mind, I have hopes and I have emotions. I love Star Trek and Doctor Who and hate avocado and asymmetry. My dream is to have a world where genetic engineering isn’t hampered by religion and where meat can be grown in labs so that animals don’t have to suffer. What is your dream?
This has happened, though I usually don’t faint. The fainting is a product of the hyperventilating, which is exacerbated by the screaming. I’m usually calmer and I just cover my ears and hide until it’s over.
